Ontario Science Centre Relocation PDC

The Ontario Science Centre Relocation (PDC project) represents the development of a new, state-of-the-art cultural and educational facility at Ontario Place, replacing the existing Don Mills location. The new facility, approximately 400,000 sq. ft., will be delivered through a combination of new construction and the adaptive reuse of the Ontario Place Pods, Cinesphere, and connecting bridges.
Quasar was selected to provide Mechanical, Electrical, and ICAT for both the new Science Centre and associated underground parking structure. The project targets high-performance building outcomes, incorporating low-carbon strategies and energy-efficient building systems. From an engineering perspective, the design integrates resilient mechanical and electrical infrastructure with advanced ICAT systems to support evolving exhibit technologies and digital experiences, while aligning with Ontario Building Code, NECB, and accessibility requirements.
The defining complexity of the project is the integration of modern systems within heritage structures, requiring careful coordination to preserve cultural value while delivering contemporary performance standards. The project also demands alignment across multiple stakeholders, including government agencies, operators, and design-build partners.
This project will stand as a landmark cultural infrastructure initiative, combining sustainability, adaptive reuse, and advanced building systems to shape the future of science engagement in Ontario.
