The M&E Impact of CSA's Proposed LTC Home Standard

Spanning the last few weeks, Dallas Bovay, Executive Vice President, Healthcare Sector Lead at Quasar, and team have been helping stakeholders to understand the substantial changes to mechanical and electrical building system design requirements of the Canadian Standards Association's draft standard, aimed at harmonizing the design and operation of long-term care homes across Canada. If the new standard is adopted by the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care in the not so distant future, these changes have a significant impact on the capital and operational cost of long-term care homes. Dallas' team has been assisting groups of long-term care home owners and developers with understanding the:

  • current regulations enforced in Ontario relating to LTC Home design

  • healthcare facility specific design standards and the applicability to LTC homes

  • CSA Z8004 mechanical and electrical system design requirements

  • comparison between current regulations and CSA Z8004

  • high level cost impact
