McMaster University Life Sciences Building

The McMaster University Life Sciences Building Renewal and Research Greenhouse Addition involved the delivery of a new 11,000 SF research greenhouse addition to the existing Life Sciences Building, designed as a district energy–integrated facility within an active campus utility network.
The greenhouse addition includes a large two-storey greenhouse and a series of large and small research cells with highly specialized environmental requirements. From the outset, the mechanical design was developed to align with campus-scale district energy objectives, incorporating a new ground source heat pump (GSHP) geo-exchange system that operates as a distributed energy node interconnected in parallel with the existing campus Central Utility Plant (CUP).
The GSHP system was designed to function as the primary heating and cooling source while maintaining full integration with the campus district energy network to provide operational redundancy, load balancing, and long-term system resiliency. This hybrid approach leverages localized low-carbon generation while maintaining centralized utility coordination.
Infrastructure upgrades delivered as part of the project included:
Replacement of high-voltage normal and emergency electrical switchboards with tie-in to the campus network
Central steam and condensate system upgrades
New incoming firewater services and fire pump to facilitate future program goals
Washroom renovations to support universal accessibility needs
Life safety infrastructure enhancements across the building
The project also incorporated future-ready provisions to enable solar thermal energy to be integrated as a district energy input, allowing thermal energy to be used to recharge the geo-exchange field and further decarbonize campus heating loads over time. The project was designed to achieve LEED Silver certification and a minimum 25% reduction in annual energy consumption relative to the Model National Energy Code for Buildings (MNECB).
