The Burnaby Hospital Redevelopment Project is part of Fraser Health’s commitment across the region to modernize the health care network, build capacity and improve timely access to quality, patient-centred care.
Phase I of the project scope includes a total of 400,000 sq. ft. consisting of the design and construction of a new six level patient tower with multiple levels of underground parking, the design and construction of a new seven level expansion to the existing acute care Support Facilities Building, a new campus central plant, renovations to areas of the existing Support Facilities Building and the Nursing Tower, and the demolition of the Cascade and West Wing buildings. Programs include various inpatient units, including mental health and substance use, maternity care and neonatal intensive care, an expanded emergency department, new operating suites, pre and post operative areas, medical device reprocessing, food services along with various other support and administrative areas. Project targeting LEED Gold.
Challenge And Solution: Phase 1 of the Burnaby Hospital Redevelopment touches all existing buildings on the campus, whether through expansion, renovation, demolition or infrastructure upgrade, which results in significant phasing challenges to keep the hospital campus fully operational throughout the construction phase. Multiple design and construction solutions are being implemented to minimize disruption to the hospital campus including the provision of a new central heating and cooling plant in parallel to the existing to back feed the remainder of the hospital campus prior to decommissioning old equipment, temporary air handling units which are being used to support temporary decanting and swing spaces, and the phased replacement of individual shafts and risers which is being implement to minimize the extent of individual shutdowns in renovated buildings.
