Weeneebayko Health Authority (WAHA) Redevelopment Progressive Design-Build
BURNABY, BC
The Weeneebayko Area Health Authority (WAHA) Redevelopment Project involves the design and construction of a new 335,000 sq. ft. healthcare campus in Moosonee and a new 15,000 sq. ft. Ambulatory Care Centre on Moose Factory Island in Ontario.
The new health campus will include 36 private inpatient beds, an emergency department, surgical suites, a dialysis unit, mental health and addictions programming, primary health care services, lab and pharmacy areas, diagnostic imaging and a traditional healing facility.
In addition to the above, separate buildings are being constructed to accommodate a 32-bed Elder Care Lodge, a Hostel for patients and visitors and Residences for staff. The new ambulatory care centre will include emergency health services, access to primary health care, diagnostic imaging, physiotherapy, dental services, dialysis, the Ontario Telemedicine Network, a traditional healing facility and health promotion programming. Project targeting LEED Silver.
The facility provides complex care while meeting aggressive energy, carbon and sustainability targets. The progressive project is unique as it uses low-carbon systems and a high-performance envelope system in a Northern climate.
Challenge And Solution: The remote location and limited availability of local material and labor has necessitated the extensive use of offsite prefabrication and modular construction methods to minimize project and schedule risk. Major mechanical and electrical rooms, as well as multi-trade racks for service distribution, are being prefabricated offsite in a controlled environment and will be subsequently shipped to site and assembled in the building when ready.
